The B Family Cleveland, Ohio | Lake Erie Photo Session at Mentor Headlands

As a family photographer, I often encourage families to choose session locations that not only provide beautiful scenery but also keep the little ones engaged and happy. This is especially important for outdoor evening sessions, which can coincide with the challenging bedtime routines of toddlers.

The beach provided driftwood to climb on, rocks and sand to play with, and water to splash in. Which is basically endless entertainment for curious toddlers. The decision to head to the beach wasn’t just about the stunning backdrop; it was strategic, ensuring the little one had plenty to explore and enjoy while we captured their family moments.

Contrary to the typical summer beach session, a fall visit to Lake Erie has its own charm.

The cooler weather means less crowding and a more serene environment for a family shoot. The soft, golden light of a fall sunset creates an almost magical setting, especially on the water where the reflections add a beautiful glow to the scene.

For this particular session, the beach was more than just a location; it was a part of the experience. The toddler was thrilled to chase the birds, climb on the driftwood, and play at the water’s edge. Holding his dad’s hand while splashing in the shallow waves, he was perfectly content and full of smiles.

These activities not only kept him busy but also brought out genuine expressions of joy and wonder, which are the heart of memorable family photographs.

One key piece of advice for families planning a sunset beach session is to be open to a little mess. Whether it’s getting sandy, a bit wet, or even a little dirty, it’s all part of the fun. Kids are naturally drawn to the elements, and allowing them to play freely can lead to some of the best photos. Plus, the joy of playing in such a beautiful setting can extend bedtime just enough to capture that perfect evening light.
